How to check PF Balance: The Top 4 ways

Salaried employees are eligible to become members of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) scheme that helps them save for a secured retirement. The EPF scheme is an employer-employee contribution scheme that continues throughout the employee’s active working life. The contributions to the scheme get accumulated in the EPF account.

The account regularly earns guaranteed interest as determined by the government. This interest income helps the corpus grow. The EPF scheme additionally offers liquidity in the form of partial withdrawals. You can check the balance in your account at any time to find out how much corpus you have accumulated and also make withdrawal decisions. So, let’s find out how to check the PF balance.

What is EPF?

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is an investment scheme that allows salaried employees to create a retirement corpus through active contributions during their working life.

So, if you are a salaried employee, you and your employer would contribute monthly to the EPF account. The contribution is 12% of your monthly basic salary. This contribution keeps accumulating, along with interest, till retirement. Thereafter, when you retire, you get the corpus to fund your retirement along with an annuity income for your lifetime.

Thus, with EPF, you can create a guaranteed retirement corpus and enjoy tax benefits too. Now that you know what the scheme is, let’s understand how to check your accumulated PF balance.

4 Ways to Check your PF Balance

If you are wondering: how to check my PF balance, there are four different ways to do so. These are as follows:

1. Using the UMANG app

The Central government has introduced the UMANG app for citizens of India to enable quick access to a host of government services at one place. You can download the Unified Mobile Application for New Age Governance (UMANG) app and check your PF balance on your mobile phone.

To access the app, complete a one-time registration process using your UAN-registered mobile number. Here are the simple steps to check your PF balance using the UMANG App:

  • Install the UMANG app.
  • Select the ‘EPFO’ option.
  • Click on “Employee Centric Services.”
  • Then click on ‘view passbook’ and fill in your UAN number.
  • Then enter the one-time password that will be sent to your registered mobile phone.
  • Now you can view your EPF transactions, including deposits and withdrawals, from your previous and current employment.

2. Using EPFO Portal

Members of the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) can use the EPFO portal to access their PF information and EPF passbook. However, for this, the employee should have an activated UAN. The process to check the PF balance through the EPFO portal is stated as follows:

  • Visit the EPFO portal (https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php).
  • Click on the ‘employees option’ under the ‘services tab.’
  • Then select the ‘member passbook’ option under services.
  • Enter your UAN number and password to log in.
  • Access your EPF passbook and check your opening/closing balance, PF transfers, the interest generated, and the fund balance.

3.  Via SMS

You can also send a text to 7738299899 to get information about your provident fund balance and most recent contribution to the fund. To use this method, you have to register your UAN with the EPFO.

Transmit the message: “EPFOHO UAN ENG.” You can get the information in your preferred language by typing the first three characters of your preferred language.

For instance, type “EPFOHO UAN MAR” to get the information in Marathi. You can set your preferred language to Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali, Hindi, English, Kannada, or Malayalam.

4. Via missed call

If you do not have access to the internet, you can still check your PF balance through the missed call option. Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered phone number to access your PF balance if you have registered yourself on the UAN site.

However, the missed call service is available only upon integration of UAN with KYC details such as your Aadhar card, PAN card, and bank account information. You may request your employer to plant the KYC details into your UAN for free or do so yourself.

There is no service charge for this. You will receive an SMS with details of your PF balance soon after making the missed call.

How to Check the EPF Balance of Exempted Establishments/Private Trusts?

In the case of a private trust or exempted establishments, the EPF contribution goes to the trust managed by the companies rather than the Employee Provident Fund Organisation.

The employees of such exempted establishments or private trusts can check their PF balance only through the company-managed trust.

For EPF accounts maintained with the private trust of exempted establishments, there is no common method to check the EPF balance, and the EPFO does not provide the facility of a PF passbook.

The exempted establishments are large companies that have their own in-house private PF trusts to handle the PF funds.

These establishments are exempted from contributing to the EPF their PF Corpus as per the Employee Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

These private trusts provide higher interest rates on the funds in comparison to EPF-managed funds while keeping other rules the same for PF contributions.

The individuals working in exempted establishments can check their PF balance in four ways, as discussed as follows:

1. Check the employee portal of your company

Large companies generally maintain a website on which you can log in and check your PF balance in the EPF section. Companies such as TCS and Wipro provide the facility to check the PF balance online and download a PF statement.

2. Check your pay slip

Large organisations mail the employees’ pay slips to their registered mail ID with the breakup of the CTC. The employees can check the PF slip for PF balance and can find their monthly contributions and additions to the PF account on that slip.

3. Check with the HR department of the company

You can contact the Human Resources department of your company to obtain your PF balance as the HR department deals with the PF of the employees in the organisation.

4. Keep track of your monthly contributions to the fund

Keep track of your monthly contribution by checking your salary slip on a regular basis and calculating your annual EPF balance. Calculate the interest considering the interest rate stated by the private trust and add it to your and your employers’ date contributions to find out your PF balance.

Closing Thoughts

Although the employee’s salary slip provides an idea of provident fund deduction in the CTC breakup, checking your passbook regularly and maintaining the PF balance is necessary, as the scheme is beneficial.

Moreover, the provision for checking the PF balance allows the employee to check whether there is any default in depositing the provident fund by their employer. So, know how to check your PF balance online or offline – through messages/missed calls. These provisions however demand for your UAN.

In the absence of UAN, you can still check your PF balance online at EPFO, which is also pretty simple. Hence, remember to reconcile your PF balance from time to time to remain updated.
