Silver has been in the limelight for several years, and analysts are optimistic about its potential as an investment in the country. Notably, the data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry shows that silver imports in India rocketed to 5,100 tonnes in the first seven months of 2022. Moreover, silver is a more cost-effective investment option than gold, as gold prices rise almost regularly.

Bhatinda, formerly known as Whatinda and Bitunda, is a significant rail hub, with lines converging from Pakistan and several Indian states. It serves as a marketplace for the region's agricultural products, and its industries include handloom, weaving, and flour milling.

Bathinda has recently experienced a massive demand for silver, which is majorly met by imports. It is more sought after during special occasions and festivals and is fulfilled mainly by jewellery stores.

Silver as an Investment in Bathinda

There are multiple silver investment options in Bathinda, including:

1. Jewellery, Bullion, Coins or Bars: A typical method of investing in silver is to purchase jewellery, bullion, bars, and coins. Due to their purity, they have a high resale value as well.

2. Silver ETFs: On November 9, 2021, SEBI approved the introduction of Silver ETFs by mutual fund companies. Silver ETFs follow the open market price of silver for tracking. These can be bought online and kept in Demat accounts.

3. Mining Companies: You can also invest in the shares of companies that mine silver. Such investments can provide high returns; however, it is essential to do an extensive analysis of the company you are investing in to make an informed decision.

4. Digital Silver: It is a relatively new investment option in the market. Digital silver, often known as e-silver, is a National Spot Exchange innovation that enables the public to invest smaller sums of money and hold their purchase in a Demat form.

How is the Purity of Silver Evaluated in Bathinda?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) began hallmarking silver in 2005. The silver should have five essential elements. These are listed below:

1. BIS mark: This mark looks like a triangle with a dot.

2. Fineness: The purity rating for fine silver is either 999.9, 999.5, or 999. Usually, jewellery, artefacts and silver alloys are marked at 970, 925, 900, 835, and 800.

3. The assay centre's identification mark: Your silver jewellery must display the lab logo that determines its purity. Only authorised BIS laboratories are allowed to check for purity.

4. Jeweller’s identification mark: The silver you purchase must have a licensed jeweller's identity mark.

5. Year of marking: It indicates a code designating the BIS hallmarking year.

How to Buy Silver in Bathinda?

To get the best quality silver in Bathinda, the following things need to be kept in mind:

1. Purity of Silver

Purity can be assessed based on the BIS mark, fineness, jeweller’s identification mark, and the year of making.

2. Proper Research

This research depends on your investment goal and should include the type of silver you want; for example, if your goal is to gift it, jewellery is a great option. However, silver bars or coins are fantastic for long-term investments.

3. Check the making charges

When purchasing silver jewellery, you might accept the jeweller's quoted pricing; however, you need to find out from the jeweller what the market price for silver is and the added making charge. Usually, making charges for silver items are lower than those for gold.

4. Enquire about the buy-back policy

Always ask the jeweller about the buy-back policy: how much will they be willing to pay if you resell the silver to them later.
